Advent Reflection - December 2, 2019

Scripture Reading

John 1:1-5 - The Word Became Flesh

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

Reflection

It’s all about love!

Long before there were boundaries of space and time and before the foundation of the World, God was! And with God was the Word, God’s Son called Jesus the Christ. God created the universe and set the planets in orbit. God placed the sun, the moon and the stars in the sky and created the land and the sea and all creatures on the earth. God breathed life into the world. And then, to help us better understand God’s deep and eternal love for all creation, God sent God's beloved Son…God's Word…for all God's people. This Son, the second person of the Trinity, came into the world, a perfect being, to live among us.

God’s love is given a voice in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus proclaims the Word of our Creator. Jesus’ teachings speak of God’s love and justice. He gives us the greatest commandments, that we love one another and that we love our neighbors as ourselves.

This passage so beautifully expresses God’s unfailing love for us, the greatest love of all. That God sent God's Son to be the Light of the World and to live among us as God’s Presence in the world is a profound statement of God's devotion to all creation. Through Jesus Christ we learn how to care for our neighbors, both near and far, and live in harmony with them.

In the promise of God’s unconditional and everlasting love lies great hope. While our world sometimes feels so overcome with darkness, the Light still shines brightly. With God’s grace that Light inspires us to constantly and persistently seek ways to live into the Light through our ministries and through kindness toward one other.

Thanks be to God.

Prayer

Loving God,

In the holiness of Christmas, bring our hearts more fully to you. Help us to know you and feel your unconditional love as we remember the birth of your Child. Amen.
